Inhabited by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans before it was settled by English colonists in the mid-1600s, the community we now know as Cold Spring Harbor has had a long and rich history. It is a history, moreover, that has been very well-preserved indeed, as evinced by the many examples of historic Cold Spring Harbor real estate that remain standing to this day.

A hamlet within the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, New York, Cold Springs Harbor has evolved continuously through the years. Starting out as a mill town, it became a whaling village in the late 1700s, then a resort town in the late 1800s, before becoming the mainly residential community that it is today.

What Cold Spring Harbor is most famous for, however, is the world-renowned laboratory that shares its name. Though it’s actually located in the adjacent village of Laurel Hollow, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) , which was established here in 1890, has helped shape the community into what it is today. The presence of CSHL has, among other things, contributed to the steadily growing appeal of Cold Spring Harbor real estate. CSHL, a center for research in genetics and molecular biology, has helped foster the careers of several Nobel Laureates, including that of Dr. James D. Watson, who served as the Laboratory’s director and president for several decades.
